FAQ's
1. Does Trucurve only supply the glass, or do we have a supply and fit service ?
Yes we have a supply and fit service or you can buy the glass from us and fit it yourself. We can even meet you halfway and measure for you, allowing you to fit it yourself. Unfortunately we can only stand over what we do ourselves.
2. How much does it cost ?
It very much depends on the amount of skill and labour involved. For example a splashback area without sockets on the wall will be significantly cheaper than one that has one or more sockets in it. The simplest way to get a costing is to fill in the dimensions on an enquiry form for either a wall/ vertical type surface, or a flat counter surface and indicate any cut-outs which apply. We will send you a quote within 48 hours.
3. What glass is used ?
Essentially any glass in any thickness and virtually any size can be used, but for the majority of applications, 6mm ‘low iron’ toughened glass is used. This is to ensure safety along with a true reflection of the colour chosen. Ordinary flat glass has an iron content which gives it a green hue, and this distorts many of the lighter colours giving them a slightly murky effect. For counter tops, obviously the glass needed is a lot heavier, usually 19 or 25mm thick.
4. Should the glass be toughened or not ?
Glass is toughened for 2 reasons, to make it safe and to make it strong. While there is a little to be saved by not having it toughened, the main advantage of toughened glass is that it will withstand knocks and bangs both during installation and every day afterwards and will also withstand heat up to 400 degC (think of hot plates). One drawback is that it cannot be cut or drilled if there is a mistake in sizes
5. Can the glass be backlit for effect ?
The paint coatings applied do not allow either natural or electrically generated light to shine through from the back and therefore lighting effects are always from the front, (usually above or below). If you want coloured glass backlit for something special like a reception counter or some other such feature, check out our ‘coloured laminates’ for some great ideas.
6. Can colour be applied to curved glass ?
Yes it can. Areas such as curved low level counter fronts, round pillars, and feature wall- panelling are just some examples of where this is used.
7. To keep costs down, can I measure and fit the glass myself ?
The answer is a qualified ‘yes’!. While it is not difficult to measure something, it is vitally important that it is done accurately, because if there are any mistakes, especially when using toughened glass, it can be very costly. See our ‘guidelines on how to measure for coloured glass’.
Fitting the glass is relatively easy once the measurements are right. Each panel will come with double sided adhesive pads on it. These will generally hold the glass long enough for the special silicone based adhesive to cure and form a permanent bond. Where two panels are butt jointing, aesthetically it is important to ensure that both panels are on the same level. Clear spacer blocks are supplied to sit the glass onto on the bottom. This provides necessary freedom for movement of the glass and allows a space for silicone sealing to finish. One key area from a safety point of view, is when there are sockets involved. Please ensure that all power is turned off prior to disconnecting any sockets and a good idea is to make a diagram of the wiring to ensure no problems when reconnecting afterwards.
8. Is regular maintenance required ?
The only maintenance needed is a quick clean. Our glass is coated leaving a surface to which dirt does not readily bond. So to keep your colored glass in pristine condition, use warm, slightly soapy water (just literally a couple of drops) to clean, and finish off with a squeegee or dry cloth. Voilla!
