How To Measure Coloured Glass

Guidelines on how to measure for coloured glass:

When measuring a confined rectangular space, first ensure that it is square. If it is not you must work to the narrower points and allow normal tolerances. Good practice is a minimum tolerance of 3mm around the edge of the glass, except where it is being joined.

For splashbacks, you first need to check if the counter top that the glass will rest on, is level. This is important because, if it is not, it will affect any joints there might be. You then measure the height, followed by the width, allowing 3 – 5mm top and bottom, and for any sides where there is no joint. Where there are sockets and cut-outs involved, you are strongly advised to get a sheet of 4 or 6mm mdf and make a template. You don’t have to take off the socket face(s) but rather put a mark on the center of each socket and then drill a corresponding 20 or 25mm dia. hole in the template itself. Then by placing the template against the wall, you can check and see if the template accurately reflects the overall space itself and the position of any sockets or cut-outs.

For counter tops, if there is a sink involved you must make a proper template with an accurate cut-out for the sink itself. If it is being fitted into a confined space, make sure there is enough freedom around it. This is so important as mistakes in most cases cannot be rectified and can be very costly.
