Toughened curved glass is one of two types of safety glass currently used throughout the construction sector. Its main advantage, it has a structural strength five times that of standard annealed glass and is ideal for all applications that require the glass to be drilled and mechanically fixed. While it is not guaranteed unbreakable, it is a safety glass in that if it is broken, it explodes into small irregular shaped fragments. It is their size and weight and break pattern which reduces the risk of serious injury normally associated with broken glass. Toughened glass is produced by heating the glass to a temperature of approximately 700 deg C and then quickly blasting it with cold air to form a tough ‘skin’ on the outside of the panel. It is this skin or stress on the glass surface which gives it its strength.

Applications: Toughened curved glass is used where there is a need for structural strength along with safety. It could be a ‘glass wall’ or ‘glass balustrade’ point fixed to a masonry or metal structure via pre-drilled holes. The fact that it is not unbreakable means that the trend nowadays is for two toughened panels to be laminated together to give that extra insurance many specifiers demand.
